As a child, Siddharth was fond of science and excited by the possibilities it afforded. However in recent times, it seems that the focus has shifted away from its varied disciplines. Moreover, the way it is now taught doesn't seem to nurture an inquisitive mind.
We feel that scientific curiosity in individuals is essential to improving the world’s state of affairs and should be cultivated at the school level.
In 2013, I saw a short film made by the students of UCSB regarding a similar situation in USA and remember thinking to myself “If science was taught like this throughout school, my life could have turned out differently”. It is embedded below and I really encourage you to watch it.
Nonetheless we cannot ignore ground realities. Many of the children go begging in the streets after school. For their families, it is a source of income and going to school means more of an opportunity cost than an investment. Not all families can afford to pull their children's weight for extended durations.
This scholarship aims to remove this friction and help the children focus on their education. We are almost done finalizing the scholarship's details while working with the school on other projects. The scholarship will be structured as mentioned below:
Students who place first and second in General Science and Social Science will be given money on a monthly basis.
As the Arya Samaj school takes 4 tests, eligibility to the scholarship will be determined by the winner of each test.
The aim is to encourage consistency in their efforts and to encourage distribution of the incentive.
